The Webelos 2 Den (5th
Graders) from Cub Scout Pack # 712 in Jefferson Hills
had a field trip in Pittsburgh on September 20th. First,
they completed the Flag Ceremony at the "Naturalization
Oath Ceremony" on Friday morning at the Federal
Courthouse. The Department of Naturalization and
Immigration conducts this ceremony each month for the
new US citizens; however, September is a particularly
special event due to Citizenship Week and Constitution
Day that both occur during that month. Following the
morning at the courthouse, they then toured the WPXI
Studios in the Northside later that afternoon. While on
the WPXI tour the scouts were in the right place at the
right time and bumped into Jerome Bettis while he was
taping his weekly TV Show. Jerome Bettis and Bill
Phillips even filmed a special website only segment with
the cub scouts.
Check out their clip with Jerome Bettis on the WPXI
website, please click HERE.
The scouts names are
as follows: Andy, Christian, and Nathan from McClellan
Elementary. Alexander from Jefferson Elementary.
Jeffrey from Gill Hall Elementary and Joshua, formerly
of Gill Hall Elementary.

Congratulations to Pleasant Hills Middle School
for being a 2013 STEAM grant awardee for a
proposal to create a Digital Communication
Station, which will enable students to apply
concepts of shooting video and editing video and
creating storyboards for television production.
The Digital Communication Station will also
enable students to take their creativity and
bring their ideas to fruition through the use of
technology. This proposal was selected from over
80 grant submissions and is to be funded in the
amount of $20,000 by the generous support of the
Benedum and Grable Foundations. The school
district is extremely proud of this recognition
for our Middle School as the grant process was
very competitive this year and we would like to
acknowledge and congratulate all staff involved
for their hard work.
Compassion, character, and
humanity exemplify the students, parents,
administration, faculty, and staff in the
West Jefferson Hills School District.
Through their generosity and commitment they
have supported various national and
international foundations and associations,
which dedicate themselves to education,
aiding children, medical research, and
community outreach. Click
