JEFFERSON  HILLS LIBRARY

TEEN ADVISORY BOARD (T.A.B.)

MISSION:  To promote Literacy in the community

The Teen Advisory Board (T.A.B.) is comprised primarily of 8th – 12th grade students who are involved in promoting literacy in the community.  Since teens have very busy schedules, there are no set time requirements for belonging to T.A.B.;  however, it is important to be committed to the purpose of the organization.  Those students who are active in T.A.B. will receive credit hours for their participation.  Library volunteerism is useful for educational purposes such as college resumes, and scholarships.  In addition, these service hours can be used toward scouting, rotary club, religious, ethnic, political, and other service awards.

The Teen Advisory Board enables student to gain important leadership, communication, and social skills while providing a valuable service to the community.  This organization is invaluable for students pursuing a degree in education, library science, social service, or other related fields because it enables them to help children and teens develop lifetime learning skills.  In addition, teens gain a greater understanding of the library’s importance in the community while implementing important tasks which are needed for the library’s function.

Lastly, volunteering at the library is a great way of meeting new people, developing lasting friendships, and helping the people in our community.

THE TEEN ADVISORY BOARD implements the following tasks:

1.      Help with the Children and Teen Reading Programs.  This includes the “Summer Reading Program” as well as the “In School Reading Program”.  During the “Summer Reading Program”, teens can help with craft projects, reading, drama, and child supervision.  During the “In School Reading Programs” teens can participate in the “Back to School Program”, Jefferson Hills’ “Light Up Night” celebration, as well as other programs which encourage children to read.
