Journals- Based on your reading from yesterday, answer the following question:  “What does it mean to be a part of the postmodern media culture?”

 

P-O-V question- what do you think of the shows “Jackass” and “The Jerry Springer Show”?  Should they be on tv?  Read “Examining Ethics” on pgs 20-1 and debate this point.

If you had a child YOUR AGE in this day and age, what limits (if any) would you place on their internet experience?  Why?

If time allows, begin reading “Critiquing Media and Culture” beginning on page 31 and continuing on to page 32.

Turn to pages 32 and 33 in your book.  Read the opening together.  Students break into 5 groups to make posters of the five stages of media literacy.  Summarize your paragraph and then present your poster.  Decorations and style will help your grade!  =)

Read “The Global Village” on page 34.  P-O-V question:  To what extent has the export of American television had a NEGATIVE impact on the global society?  Hint: extremist religious groups using Baywatch to prove that America is evil.  NO HW

HW:  Read pages 46-52. This section discusses the various aspects of the Internet.

Journals- React to the quote on page 49 by Tim Miller.   Is the accumulation of web pages of the same value as the accumulation of books?  How so? 

 

Begin reading/discussing “Ownership Issues on the Internet” on page 52.  Discuss figure 2.2 on page 54.

Begin discussion on page 56 – “Alternative Voices” and discuss LINUX.   How is LINUX a rebellion against the privatization of the internet?

 

Go to NPR.org and listen to 'Marketplace' Report: Microsoft Loses Court Fight.  (type title into search bar).  This story is from 2007.  Obviously the European courts really do not like their citizens to be told that they HAVE to use Microsoft!

Begin discussion of “Free Expression, Security and Access” on page 57.  Discuss the need for keeping personal information private in some length.  Do the students have myspace or facebook accounts?  How would they react if a future employer saw their page?

 

Reading: pages 57, 58, 59, 61, top of 62.

Read/discuss “Is your computer spying on you?” on page 60.  How many in the room have encountered spyware? What did it do to your computer?

 

Journals:  Respond to the quote by Joe Trippi on page 63 or Janal Robert Orina on page 62.  1 paragraph.  Share responses.  Your journals will be collected next week.

Read/discuss “Citizens, the Internet, and Democracy” on pages 62, 63, 65. 

 

Read/discuss “The Global Village” on page 64.

 

HW:  Respond to the quote “Many cultures see the Internet as an arm of Western imperialism and as a bastion of pornography and consumerism” (64).  Manuscript form.  15 pts.  Make sure to have a clear THESIS!!
