Timeline of Activities

Fall 2005
Activity 1: Exploration Day- Students are introduced to the outdoor classroom prior to any changes to the space. They observed and recorded observations in a "Sense Chart," sketched their ideas for the space, and wrote a summary of their plans for the space. Length of Time: 60 minutes Click here to view the handout we used.

Activity 2: Student Clean-up Day- Students began cleaning up the area using small, non-electric tools. Length of time: one-40 minute class period. Click here to view some photos.

Activity 3: Appeal Letters- A guest speaker spoke to each Language Arts class about writing procurement letters. Students formulated a mission statement for their cause and discussed "branding." In small groups, student composed letters requesting material or monetary donations from local businesses. Letters were mailed to local businesses on school letterhead. Length of Time: Two-40 minute class periods.

Activity 4: Faculty, Staff, and Parent Clean-up Day- Adults using chainsaws, a shredder, and stump grinder, were able to clear the old, overgrown vines, dead trees and shrubs, and garbage fromthe outdoor classroom area. This activity was held on Saturday, November 5, 2005. The day was a huge success! Click here to see photos. Length of Time: 5 hours

Activity 5: Soil Projects
- Team 7-1 students learned about general characteristics of soil using PA's AgMag on soil. The AgMag can be obtained from.....It is a great, easy-to-read circular on soil. Students were then given the freedom to select a topic on soil and present this project to their peers. Length of Time: two-40 minute for using PA Agmag and student planning time. Activity 6: Fundraising Continues
- The outdoor classroom committee continued to send out appeal letters for donations and research corporate funding possibilities.
