Home Sweet Homework!

Homework in first grade is a vital link to parents. It keeps you informed and involved in your child's education. It also teaches students to be responsible. The student must bring home the assignment, complete it with parental guidance and return it to school.

What homework should I expect?

Monday(or the first day of the week) - Spelling and Vocabulary Words
Students will practice reading the weekly vocabulary list. They must copy the weekly spelling list two additional times in their spelling notebooks. Continue to review throughout the week for the test on Friday. Spelling notebooks should come home each Monday and be returned on Friday(or the last day of the week).

Tuesday - Math
Usually a skill sheet or a game that reinforces a math concept will be assigned.

Wednesday - Take-Home-Book
A short story will be sent each Wednesday. This story uses the weekly vocabulary words in context. Take turns reading with your child. Encourage fluent oral reading. Talk about the story. Enjoy it together. Please sign and return the weekly Take-Home-Book on the following school day.

Thursday - Study for Friday's Spelling test and vocabulary recognition test.

Friday - HAVE A FUN-FILLED WEEKEND!

How much homework should I expect?

First graders should spend no more than 10-15 minutes each evening on homework. If your child is consistently spending more time than this, please let me know. Or if a specific assignment takes an extraordinary amount of time, please let me know. Unless otherwise noted, homework must be returned the following school day.

Do I correct my child's mistakes?

Some of the assigned homework in first grade must be completed with family members. Games or word cards are fun ways to spend time together and review skills learned at school. However, many homework assignments are considered independent tasks. These also require parental involvement. Always review your child's homework. Discuss any mistakes. If there's a particular problem, please make a note of it and send it with your child.
