Mr. Zupan joined West Jefferson
Hills School District on January 1, 2008. He was a McKeesport
native and graduated from McKeesport High School in 1968 and
immediately began working as an accountant for Potter-McCune
Co., a McKeesport wholesale food distributor, until 1974. He
also served a two-year tour of duty with the United States
Marine Corps during his time at that company. He joined Polar
Water Co., now known as Crystal Springs Water Co., in 1974 and
spent the next 30 years with the company until his retirement in
2004. During his career with the water company, he spent 25
years on the financial side of the business as a
divisional/regional controller, and served his last 5 years as a
regional sales manager directing all operations for a
multi-state region. During his time with the water company, he
obtained an associate degree in accounting from the Community
College of Allegheny County. In 2005, he spent a brief time
working as a contracted accountant at Chartiers Valley School
District. In 2006, he worked as a contracted accountant at the
City of Pittsburgh Public Schools which led to his assignment at
the Duquesne City School District in July, 2006 as part of an
Inter- Governmental Agreement between the State Department of
Education and the two school districts. In September, 2006, he
was hired by Duquesne as its financial officer on the
recommendation of Pittsburgh school officials to handle the
financial affairs of the district. He along with Pittsburgh
school officials were recognized and honored as Achievement
Award recipients at the Pennsylvania Association of School
Business Officials Annual Conference in March, 2008 for their
managerial support to the Duquesne City School District in
connection with the Inter-Governmental Agreement between the two
school districts.
He and his wife Carolyn reside in
Duquesne. They have two children, Joseph Jr. and Angela Hafen
and two grandchildren, Jameson and Ava Hafen.
