The Guidance Counselors are ready and eager to assist you in your endeavors throughout high school. The functions of the counselors will be unique to each student's needs. However, the primary goals of counseling and guidance at Thomas Jefferson will be to meet the developmental needs of students in the educational system for the realization of their maximum potential.
The functions of the counselors are varied. The following identify some of the services/activities that are rendered:
•Provide individual counseling to students
•Consult with school staff regarding students
•Implement a system of student records
•Establish orientation activities
•Organize informational resources to provide a basis for students to make educational/vocational decisions
•Administer and interpret the testing program
•Serve as liaison with community agencies
•Provide assistance for educational and vocational placement and planning
•Serve as liaison to teachers for students and parents
•Disseminate information pertinent to student's career planning (ie, open house programs, scholarships, etc.)
Students in all grade levels are invited to visit the
Career Center located in the Guidance Office. This is a
resource center designed to assist the students in their
career decision making. Students will find a variety of
reference materials: college and trade school
directories, reference books or scholarships, study
materials on the
PSAT,
SAT, and a computer software program that will
search for information on two-year and four-year
colleges, trade schools, military and financial aid. A
career interest survey is also included on Discover (the
current career planning program). All computers have
Internet access for students use. Students who are
interested in visiting the Career Center can do so
during their homeroom, study halls, lunch, or after
school. Passes are available before homeroom in the
Guidance Office from counselors or guidance secretary.
Recognizing that more than 50% of the student body choose to
pursue college upon graduation from Thomas Jefferson High School, the following time table for college admissions testing is being provided to assist students and parents.
