Grade Level 6
This course provides the student with an understanding of the six components
of language: reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar and mechanics, and
spelling. Students will use these components to write effectively. They will
write to inform, to persuade, to be creative, and to express themselves.
Assessment will be based upon tests and quizzes, oral presentations, writing
assignments, class assignments, homework, and participation.
Grade Level 7
Language arts at the seventh grade level emphasizes the integration of
reading, writing, listening, and speaking through textbook and teacher-designed/
student designed activities. Instruction focuses upon basic grammar and
mechanics, spelling, vocabulary, writing in a variety of modes for a variety of
audiences, and learning basic literary terms by reading and writing poetry.
Methods of assessment include tests, quizzes, homework, writing assignments, and
student projects.
Grade Level 8
Reading, writing, speaking, and listening are essential parts of the language
arts curriculum. Eighth grade language arts focuses on the fundamentals of
grammar, the four types of writing, using formal composition format, and the
comprehension of literature and literary terms such as characterization,
figurative language, foreshadowing, imagery, irony, point of view, theme, and
tone. There is also a focus on the students' development of study skills,
computer skills, responsibility, organization, and individual growth. Activities
include class assignments, cooperative group work, oral class presentations, and
the writing of a formal research paper. Evaluation is based on the punctual
completion of assignments, the quality of work, and the students' performance on
tests and quizzes.
