Grade 6
Sculpture is the core focus. Students study sculptural art
history from the Egyptians, Greeks, Africans, Renaissance, and
Modern eras. Students study in detail the work and lives of
Michelangelo Buonarroti and Henry Moore. Students then design
and sculpt a piece of sandstone in their style. Style is learned
as an element emerging naturally from each student's unique
personality/spirit and life experiences. Students are introduced
to the art critique, and critique their own, as well as
classmate's work. Student learning is aided by the creation of a
personal art journal.

collaboration with The Pittsburgh History and Landmarks
Foundation and The Pittsburgh Children's Museum. Students study
regional and international architecture via slides and Internet
images. Students study in detail about the life and work of

sketch diary, drawing images of architecture and nature.
Students design an architectural drawing and
structure. The unit culminates with a field trip to the
Pittsburgh Children's Museum and a walking tour of Grant Street,
touring the Allegheny County Courthouse and Courtyard,
City-County Building, Frick Building, Union Trust Building,
William Penn Hotel, Mellon Square and Alcoa Building. Students
continue to learn about the art critique,
and critique their own, as well as classmate's work.
