Push Needed in Final Weeks of Fall Session. Republican members of the House will be meeting in caucus next week to discuss what pieces of legislation may be brought up for a vote, and the caucus’ position on various bills. One of those items is the governor’s push for an “education reform” plan that includes vouchers and expansion of charter school and Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) programs.  Details.  Legislator Phone Numbers.
Air quality testing at Thomas Jefferson High School has been completed by  NOVA Environmental Services. Test results indicate that air quality at Thomas Jefferson High School is safe and at normal levels.
An internal complaint at Thomas Jefferson High School was received by the administration.  Mr. Denis Sobczak, the District’s Director of Facilities, engaged NOVA Environmental Services, an expert in this area, to perform the air quality testing.
In an unrelated issue, several weeks ago a small hot water heating coil located in the wrestling room was removed from service due to deterioration which resulted in a leak. The new coil was ordered and is due to be delivered by November 2nd. Installation will proceed upon delivery.
Acting Superintendent Ms. Hamsini Rajgopal, emphasized that the safety of the students, faculty and staff is at all times the highest priority and focus of the West Jefferson Hills School District.

The West Jefferson Hills School District would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Timothy McNamee for his service as the District’s Acting Superintendent. Under the guidelines of the Pennsylvania Department of Education, an Acting Superintendent can only serve for the duration of one year. We appreciate the dedication and educational guidance Dr. McNamee has provided the District during his tenure.

The West Jefferson Hills School District Board of School Directors and Administrators are pleased to announce the appointment of Mrs. Hamsini Rajgopal as our District’s Acting Superintendent, effective September 29, 2011.

Mrs. Rajgopal , Director of Human Resources, who holds a Master’s Degree from the University of Pittsburgh, has been with the District for five years. In her administrative role, Mrs. Rajgopal exemplifies professionalism and leadership. Her steadfast commitment to our students, parents and community residents parallels her respect and appreciation for the dedicated faculty and staff who have the distinguished mission of educating our children, while continuing the District’s quest for educational excellence.

The following is a quote from Mrs. Rajgopal upon her appointment as the Acting Superintendent at the September 27th School Board meeting, “It is an honor and privilege to be appointed as the Acting Superintendent of the West Jefferson Hills School District. I would like to thank the Board for their confidence in my abilities to serve in this capacity.”

The West Jefferson Hills School District 2011-2012 Administrative Budget was presented to the School Board for its review at the Regular Board Meeting of Tuesday, April 26, 2011.  There will be:

* No tax increase
* No drastic cuts to valuable education programs which help our students
* No cuts to the art program, music program, or theatre program
* No pay-to-play sports or cuts in the extracurricular activities offered to students
* No curricula eliminated
* No teacher furloughs
* A balanced budget, i.e. fund balance will not be used to balance revenue and expenses

The Board of Directors of the West Jefferson Hills School District has set the following meeting dates for August 2011 through June 2012.  The Board work sessions will begin at 7:30 P.M. on Tuesday, August 16, September 20, October 18, November 22, 2011; and January 17, February 21, March 20, April 17, May 15, and June 19, 2012.  The Regular meetings will begin at 7:30 P.M. on Tuesday, August 23, September 27, October 25, December 6, 2011; and January 24, February 28, March 27, April 24, May 22, and June 26, 2012.  The December Reorganization meeting will begin at 7:00 P.M. on December 6, 2011.  The Work Sessions, Regular, and Reorganization Board meetings will be held in the Thomas Jefferson High School Cafeteria, 310 Old Clairton Road, Jefferson Hills, PA.
 
Due to the overwhelming response to the Free sports physicals for Pleasant Hills Middle School and Thomas Jefferson High School athletes, August 9, 2011 has been added to accommodate the overflow of students.

Physicals will be done all day for Pleasant Hills Middle School, June 2 & 6, 2011.  Thomas Jefferson High School physicals will be completed on June 7, 2011.  Scheduling was completed on a first come, first served basis until all appointments were filled.
  Students will be notified of the scheduled time of their August 9, 2011 physical via US Mail.

The West Jefferson Hills School District will be using the AlertNow notification system to inform parents about an emergency such as school delays or closings due to inclement weather and other important school activities by phone, text, and/or email alerts.  The information used for AlertNow are phone numbers/e-mail addresses that you have supplied to the district and are being pulled from Power School records.  The phone numbers that will be called are the home phone number, Mother's Cell, Father's Cell, and Mother’s day phone number.  E-mails are sent to e-mail addresses supplied as the guardian e-mail.  Please note that AlertNow cannot make an automated phone call to any number with an extension attached.  If you would like to verify the phone/e-mail information that is being used by AlertNow, please call the specific school building that your child attends and talk to the building secretary.  If there is a phone number/e-mail that you wish to have removed from the AlertNow system, please let the building secretary know so that your records can be adjusted.  If you have any questions about the system please contact the Building Secretary.

The Athletic/Student Activities Committee will meet Thursday, February 24, 2011 at 8:00 A.M. in the lower-level conference room of the Administration Building, 835 Old Clairton Road, Jefferson Hills, PA.

  • The school district closure on Wednesday, January 12, 2011, was an Act 80 Day for Teacher and Administrator Professional Development.   • The West Jefferson Hills School District has not issued any permits for anyone to go through the neighborhood on the district's behalf.  Anyone who comes to your door must have a borough-issued permit.  Do not allow anyone in your house who says they are from the school district.

  • The Board of Directors of the West Jefferson Hills School District has set the following meeting dates for August 2010 through June 2011 ... Details.

  • The Board of Directors of the West Jefferson Hills School District has prepared a Preliminary Budget in the amount of funds that will be required by the School District for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2010.  The Proposed Budget is on file in the Office of the Board Secretary/Business Manager and is available for public inspection.  The Board of Directors after making such revisions and changes deemed reasonable, shall adopt a Budget and necessary appropriation measures required at a meeting of the Board to be held on Thursday, June 24, 2010 at 7:30 P.M. in the Thomas Jefferson High School Cafeteria.

  • ATTENTION ALL RESIDENTS:  Please be advised that a flyer is being distributed throughout the community regarding “Out of District Students” attending the West Jefferson Hills Schools.  Please know that the West Jefferson Hills School District educates students who reside in West Elizabeth, Jefferson Hills and Pleasant Hills Boroughs. These students may reside with their parents or legal guardians and appropriate proof of residency is required at the time of registration. The District reviews any information regarding residency issues when it is received and takes appropriate action when it discovers non residents attending District schools. Such review has resulted in the withdrawal of several students over the past several months. The documentation the District may require is determined by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Anyone wishing to review the “Student Residency” Policy may access the policy here.

  • The West Jefferson Hills School District received notification from the Pennsylvania Department of Education that four of our schools received the Keystone Achievement Award celebrating the attainment of Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for the 2007-2008 school year. Since the creation of the award five years ago, all five buildings had earned this distinction each of  the first four years. Congratulations everyone!

This system replaces the LetterGrade application that we have been using to manage student information.   • ATTENTION Parents:  Graduation Competency Exams (GCA's)  may soon be a requirement for all Pennsylvania students.  Read WJHSD Board President Shauna D'Alessandro's testimony to the Senate Education Committee on behalf of SHASDA.  On February 26, 2008 the WJHSD Board of Directors passed, by unanimous vote,  Resolution No. 230 - 08  opposing the adoption of GCA's which you can read here.  Should you agree with the district's position in this matter, please consider writing/emailing your local state senators and representatives, as well as PA House and Senate Education Committee Chairpersons, to express opposition to this proposal.
