2009-2010 West Jefferson Hills School District Community Service
Projects
The students successfully collected a significant quantity of pet supplies which were donated to Animal Friends.
In conjunction with the Spring Musical Community
Service Project, Thomas Jefferson High School Junior Shannon Kestner
organized a school –wide “Penny War.” The “Penny War” donation
program was a component of Shannon’s Senior Project. Shannon
gainfully collected more than $150 for Animal Friends. TJ Junior Nicole Miller began this unbelievable quest as a component of her Senior Project. Touched personally by the effects of congenital heart disease, Nicole organized a student- faculty volleyball game to benefit the Cardiac Wing Beads of Courage Program at Children’s Hospital. According to the Heart Center at Children’s Hospital; “The Beads of Courage Program provides support to children with congenital heart disease. Children undergoing cardiac treatment receive a necklace with their name and a bead symbolizing the cardiac program. With every milestone in their medical journey and life-saving treatment, additional beads are added to tell their unique story of understanding, acceptance, and survival. The colorful beads are worn by the children as a symbol of courage.” Showcasing their support for the Beads of Courage Program, members of the TJ faulty generously purchased numerous tickets to attend the game, and distributed the tickets to their students. Sporting decorated team shirts, the students, Team Courage, gallantly faced the faculty, Team CHD, before a sold out gymnasium. Kudos to Nicole and the Thomas Jefferson High School students, faculty, administration, and staff, who generously raised more than $1,000 for the Beads of Courage Program.
Pleasant Hills Middle School In planning the event, the eighth grade students decided to sponsor the Walk to benefit MADD. Seeking the support of family and friends, the students participating in the organized walk, collected monetary donations for MADD and successfully raised awareness of MADDs significant message. The Walk, which took place at the Middle School, covered more than 2,150 laps and 800 accumulated miles. The miles were graphically displayed as an endless red construction paper chain. When the students, faculty, administration, representatives from MADD, and the Wright family assembled in the LGI Room, they were about to witness an amazing accomplishment. The eighth grade students, parents, administration, faculty, and staff, in memory of their dear friend, collectively raised more than $9,000 for MADD.
